Phi Gamma Delta was founded on May 1, 1848 at Jefferson College in Pennsylvania with the mission to promote lifelong friendships, to reaffirm high ethical standards and values, and to foster personal development in the pursuit of excellence. Phi Gamma Delta is committed to provide opportunities for each brother to develop responsibility, leadership, scholarship, and social skills in order to become a fully contributing member of society. With nearly 180,000 initiated brothers, the Fraternity has approximately 10,000 undergraduates in the 142 chapters and 13 Delta Colonies in the United States and Canada.
For Grand Valley State University, Phi Gam’s history is a bit more recent. Colonized in April 2014, the Gamma Rho chapter of Phi Gamma Delta has devoted itself to brotherhood, service, scholarship, and courageous leadership.
As members of FIJI, we strive to solidify the foundation laid by Duke Murphy and Matt Whitlock. From our annual Purple Mitten raising upwards of $4000 a year for the United Services Organization, Inc. to hosting annual Teach-In around the topic of Mental Health; Phi Gamma Delta looks to their philanthropies as a way of giving to the community they have come from and creating awareness around issues that directly impact their brotherhood. As of fall of 2015; two brothers (Andrew Coney and Boru Zhou) have actively enlisted into the National Guard. Outside of service, the men have developed the hashtag “#BeyondTheColor” to speak out against domestic violence and assist the community throughout the month of October with awareness and volunteer opportunities.
Academically, Phi Gamma Delta recently received high regards as the number one fraternity in scholarship and fourth overall in the Greek community. Nationally, the Fraternity honors scholarship through monetary support like the AAA scholarship for any men who joins the brotherhood and obtains a 3.2 in their pledging semester.
Phi Gamma Delta at Grand Valley State University has just started to tell its story, and in doing so, growth and development is not just a part of the tale but a continuous theme that builds our dynamic individually and collectively. Perseverance is a state of being and the brothers of this organization live to press on in life, relationships and character.
