Alpha Gamma Chapter

Having just under 16,000 (now over 25k) students in 1997, Grand Valley State University was a much smaller campus altogether. The Latino (and overall students of color) population on campus represented a very small fraction of the whole student body (under 10%), and continue to be in low numbers to this day. However, in 1997, several young men began looking beyond their respective cultural student unions for the lifelong bonds of fraternity. Researching options in Greek lettered organizations that would emphasize the rich Latino/Hispanic culture, these men set their sights on bringing ΣΛΒ to the campus of GVSU. It was then on Dec 5th, 1998 that the GVSU colony of ΣΛΒ was solely founded by Brother Jeremiah "Profeta" Garza. On April 17th of the following year, Bro. Miguel 'Oso Negro' Ortiz would arrive as our Alpha ship. On November 4th, 2004, the GVSU colony earned charter status as the Alpha Gamma chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc.

Commitment, discipline, and strength in the face of adversity are character elements that the Brotherhood of ΑΓ chapter have made part of what it means to be Lambda Beta men. The chapter has since entrenched itself within the culture of GVSU, providing programs that enrich the campus and surrounding communities (such as the So You Think You're Cultured? game show, the Annual Community Clean-Up & Cook-Out service event, and the Purple Passion talent showcase).

The Alpha Gamma chapter and it's individual members have been recipients of many prestigious awards such as GVSU's Chapter of Excellence, Lighthouse Award, Coat of Arms Award, Outstanding Cultural Program, Fraternity Man of The Year, New Member of The Year, regional and national awards such as ΣΛΒ Outstanding Chapter of The Year, Brother of The Year, and have been featured in various publications and news outlets. This is most noteworthy as since 1998, the Alpha Gamma chapter has only initiated 35 members.
