The GVSU School of Social Work welcomes applicants to the Master's program. During the summer of 2020 we will continue to review applications for fall of 2020 through August.

University Requirements

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  2. Submission of all required admission materials, including:
    1. Completed graduate application for admission
    2. $30 nonrefundable application fee (unless you have previously applied to Grand Valley)
    3. Official copies of transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended. Transcripts must be sent from those institutions directly to the GVSU Admissions Office. NOTE:  We do not require official transcripts from Grand Valley
    4. For those whose native language is NOT English, either the Official TOEFL or IELTS score report. Only original score reports will be accepted.

Program Requirements

In addition to the University requirements of admission, all students seeking a degree for the Master's of Social Work must also meet the following requirements: 

  1. Grade point average of 3.0 (B) cumulative for undergraduate coursework
  2. Graduate Admission statement, using our Guidelines Formdetailing academic preparation, background experiences, and professional, educational and career goals
  3. A recent resume submitted
  4. A minimum of 18 credit hours in social or behavioral science courses and have a broad liberal arts background

  6. Recommendations: Three recommendations received from professional individuals who can respond to the questions on the form.  At least one academic reference is preferred in addition to individuals who have supervised your work or volunteer experience. You will be asked to provide the email addresses of your recommenders when you complete the online application.

MSW / MPA Admission Process

Students must be admitted to both the MSW and MPA programs. Generally, students begin with the MSW application. In addition to the University and MSW program requirements, consideration into the MSW / MPA program requires the following to be submitted:

  • Advisor request  - Students interested in pursuing both degrees should request that the School of Social Work assign them to the faculty advisor for the MSW/MPA program
  • MPA application must also be completed, including transcript, letters of reference, and resume 
  • Cover letter to the School of Public and Nonprofit Administration (SPNHA) detailing the request for admission to the MSW/MPA program
  • SPNA Basic Application filled out and submitted  
  • Essay material required by the SPNHA program submitted

If the applicant does not meet requirements but believes there are circumstances or conditions that strengthen their application, they are invited to provide a rationale regarding alternative criteria. 

Non-Degree Seeking Students: Applicants who are not seeking the MSW degree or have not completed all of the admissions requirements are considered to be Non-Degree seeking. These students may earn up to six social work credits in the School of Social Work by selecting up to two of the following courses: SW600, SW601, SW610 and SW620.
