Murray Scholarship Recipients
Established in 2006, The Mark A. & Elizabeth C. Murray
Scholarship for Study Abroad is intended to support students who wish
to study outside of the United States but without this fund would
otherwise not be able to afford to do so. In addition to the Murray
Family, the generosity of individuals, organizations and businesses
has contributed to the continuation of this scholarship, which helps
send 4 - 8 GVSU students abroad every year.
ANGELA CLULEY, COSTA RICA
Dear Murray family,
Thank you so much for your support in my study abroad
opportunity. Through your contribution I was able to study in Costa
Rica for three months and was able to take my Spanish to the next
level. While abroad I was able to travel to different areas of Costa
Rica and learn about many cultures within the country. Since I have
been back I have presented to three classrooms and two organizations
on campus about my experiences and how students can study abroad also.
Before studying abroad I had an idea for a career path and
studying abroad further solidified my chosen career path. I wanted to
be a social worker for refugees and immigrants and now I want to
directly work with refugees and immigrants in their neighborhoods.
With my increased knowledge of the Spanish language I hope this will
assist me not only in my chosen career but with other job
opportunities and speaking and understanding my own family.
After graduation I plan to be an AmeriCorps member for a year or
teach English abroad and then seek my Master’s in Social Work and
Non-Profit Administration. I plan to continue to open my mind to new
challenges and experiences while opening the minds of others to new
possibilities. I continue to impact the Grand Valley community through
my involvement as a Resident Assistant and in other groups on campus
where I speak about my experiences abroad and encourage others to seek
similar opportunities. Studying abroad has been one of the most
impactful experiences of not only my Grand Valley career but my life
as a whole.
Thank you so much,
Angela Cluley
