Connecting to a Community

Mathias Mapes-Pearson

After five years of service in the Marine Corps, Mathias, Class of 2022, knew he wanted to pursue his education but did not know where to begin.

“When I visited Grand Valley, I could feel that I was welcome here. That I was going to be a part of the Laker Family. I never felt that when I visited other schools,” said Mathias.

Transitioning back to civilian life can be difficult for veterans without ample support. Mathias chose to attend Grand Valley because he was allowed to grow within the veteran community while working towards his degree in Management Information Systems.

Now the president of Laker Vets, GVSU’s student veteran association, Mathias is helping other student veterans access the same support system that helps him.

“Like many of our veteran students, the military taught me a lot. I learned to lead, to achieve my mission, and to be willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. These are all skills I’m using in my education,” said Mathias.

Using these skills, Mathias made the transition from veteran to student veteran. Connecting with his peers through Laker Vets and utilizing the resources GVSU offers have made his transition easier.

“Every veteran should know they have support, and that pursuing their education is possible,” said Mathias.
