As we move into the final year of the Laker Effect Campaign, we’re focusing on first-generation students who often need extra support from the Grand Valley family. Experiences like study abroad and unpaid internships benefit all students, however, it is especially impactful for our first-generation college students.
I Want to Help!
Why We Care So Deeply
- First-generation students, who are the first in their family to go to college, make up 40 percent of Grand Valley’s undergraduates.
- Incoming freshman who are the first in their family to go to college have a lower retention rate than other first-year students.
- It's critical that we help integrate first-generation college students into the campus community so they stay and succeed at Grand Valley.
- First-generation students are less likely to participate in learning opportunities like internships and study abroad.
