Innovation Design Center for Engineering

We need more engineers. Specifically, more Laker engineers.

Grand Valley is the primary talent pipeline for engineers in West Michigan. Community demand has led to a 40% growth rate in Grand Valley’s engineering program over the past few years, and we have outgrown current facilities. Without the Innovation Design Center, we will have to cap our program at the current number of students which will not meet West Michigan’s talent needs.

Building Highlights

The Product Design Studio will support project based and hands-on design education. Focused on the Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs, this space will be used by students in a wide range of courses.

Today’s design process is iterative and includes analysis, idea generation, conceptual design, evaluation, computer modeling, prototyping, and testing. These studios will allow students to move back and forth from tables to computer-aided design environments as they work through the process. They will be used from first-year to graduate level courses.

Our unique educational approach requires that students have the facilities to manufacture their designs and experience the advantages and limitations of those designs by producing them. The Machine Shop will support the workspaces throughout the Innovation Design Center.

New technologies to rapidly produce prototypes of engineering designs are introduced every day. Providing our students with access to these tools greatly enhances the maturity of their designs and gives them a leg up in use of these industry caliber techniques.

The complexity of graduate-level projects, which frequently are proprietary, requires dedicated space with sophisticated and flexible infrastructure.

This room will be an area dedicated to student use to collaborate on projects with their peers, faculty, or industry partners.
