Supporting the Underrepresented

Students at Computers

Grand Valley’s history of partnering with business leaders has helped strengthen our region and our state. One example of this is Grand Valley’s partnership with Crowe LLP, one of the largest public accounting, consulting, and technology firms in the United States. Thanks to a long-standing partnership with Grand Valley and the Seidman College of Business, Crowe recently established the Crowe LLP Strive for Progress Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship encourages underrepresented students to join the accounting industry by providing financial assistance to remove barriers to earning a degree at GVSU. Scholarships from the endowment will be awarded annually.

“As we look around the industry and take an honest look at our own personnel and leadership in our Crowe Grand Rapids office, we recognize there needs to be a more concerted effort to get young people of diverse backgrounds interested in pursuing a career in accounting,” said Victor Sturgis, Senior Tax Manager at Crowe.

In Fall 2018, Grand Valley launched the West Michigan Accounting Careers Awareness Initiative, which helps direct underrepresented groups to accounting and business careers—another reason why Crowe was inspired to establish the scholarship.

“After hearing about the initiative, we not only wanted to be a part of it in any way we could, but we also wanted to help support students through the program after they’ve reached college,” said Sturgis.

Endowed scholarships like the one initiated by Crowe help ensure that the best and brightest students can have a Grand Valley education and enrich our campus, regardless of their socioeconomic situation.

“The scholarship will allow students to shift their focus from making their next tuition payment to prioritizing their academics and building networks,” said Sturgis. “Ultimately, the goal is to help the recipients of the scholarship be successful as they launch into their future in the accounting profession.”
