The Pew FTLC is offering several amazing Magna Publication enrichment sessions for educators this summer—let us pick up the tab!

The content, authored by experts from across the country, addresses critical aspects of teaching regardless of discipline.  All sessions are COMPLETELY ONLINE.

Programs include:

New(er) Teacher Program

August 4–September 21

This ONLINE summer enrichment course explores key areas of college teaching including pedagogy, active learning, and student engagement as well as modern teaching skills such as communication and controlling classroom climate.  Designed for faculty with five or fewer years of teaching or adjunct faculty looking to build pedagogical skills, this enrichment course will help newer educators improve their teaching skills.

After completing the course, educators will:

  • Understand basic course design strategies
  • Comprehend how learning assessment techniques can provide immediate feedback and improve student success
  • Learn how to evaluate technology tools in context of course objectives to avoid irrelevant investments
  • Understand how critical thinking skills can be developed in students by careful course design, assessment questions, and activities and assignments
  • Recognize hot moments in classroom conversation and know how to manage the conversation for successful outcomes
  • Gain strategies for overcoming student preparedness challenges
  • Make gender variant students—and all students—comfortable in the classroom
  • Gain tactics for active learning
  • Improve class participation in discussions
  • Modify lectures to make them more active and engaging
  • Understand rigor, and how to keep standards high in a challenging class

Approximately 15 hours to complete.

Experienced Teacher Program

August 4–September 21

Innovative professional development resources can keep faculty feeling fresh, excited, and challenged in their teaching.  This ONLINE summer enrichment course is designed for experienced educators (faculty who have been teaching for five years or more and/or department chairs), looking to hone their teaching skills and go further with content, engagement, and personal development.  Are you ready to be re-energized?

Experienced faculty who complete this summer enrichment course will:

  • Be able to design courses that teach higher-order skills such as critical thinking
  • Understand how Universal Design for Learning impacts all students and aids retention
  • Employ creative ideas to refresh existing lectures and course content
  • Understand the role of OER in class, how to add appropriate content, and the impact it will have on students
  • Learn tactics for engaging a new kind of learner
  • Move beyond basic-level Bloom’s learning by applying brain-based learning techniques
  • Improve feedback and grading strategies
  • Gain useful insight from course evaluations
  • Consider methods to manage and reduce job-related stress

Approximately 15 hours to complete.

Principles of Effective College Teaching Program

Choose from TWO sessions:

This ONLINE summer enrichment course offers content authored by Dr. Jim Lang, author of Small Teacher and several other fabulous books and is grounded in research-based best practices.  The Principles of Effective College Teaching course will introduce you the the fundamental principles of human learning that will guide you as create and teach your courses.  Participants will explore, in detail, how to do the following:

  • Craft meaningful learning objectives using Bloom’s Taxonomy
  • Manage course content efficiently
  • Create assignments that support course objectives
  • Develop assessment plans and design exams
  • Provide effective feedback and evaluations
  • Enhance learning outcomes through the use of technology and new media
  • Apply active learning strategies
  • Keep your students motivated and engaged
  • Facilitate peer-to-peer learning
  • Manage difficult issues like academic dishonesty and distracted students

Approximately 10 hours to complete.
