Welcome to the Grand Valley State University Teaching Community!

New Faculty Orientation is going VIRTUAL this year!

New Faculty Orientation will incorporate both synchronous and asynchronous materials and sessions and has been designed to:

  • Highlight critical information about the university, guiding new faculty to construct for themselves a greater understanding of (a) the mission, vision, and values of Grand Valley State University, (b) what is meant by student success, and (c) the hallmarks of a successful new faculty experience
  • Model learner-centered teaching strategies (including interactive discussions, experiential learning, case studies, special topic choices)
  • Foster a sense of community and build relationships among new faculty  
  • Motivate new faculty to see themselves contributing to a supportive, collaborative campus community

New faculty joining Grand Valley State University for the Winter 2021 semester are invited to attend one of two online orientation sessions—Tuesday, December 15, 2020 from 5:30 p.m.–7 p.m. or Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 5:30 p.m.–7 p.m.

This orientation will provide new faculty with the opportunity to discuss and explore the essentials to know before the first day of class and provide a brief overview of both faculty and student support services.  In addition to these live (virtual) session options, we also offer an online orientation comprising of short video presentations and links to resources for new faculty to explore at their own pace.  We invite all new faculty to view the online orientation modules prior to attending the live-sessions as they are able.

Participation in these optional sessions will allow new faculty to engage with our Center staff and ask questions directly.

New Adjunct Faculty ONLINE Orientation

New adjunct faculty are invited to complete our online orientation program.  Work through the modules from your own home and at your own pace.  We'll be holding TWO virtual drop-in office hours exclusively for new faculty—to answer any questions you might have, about the orientation modules or about starting at GVSU in general.

This online orientation focuses on information that is essential to your teaching at GVSU.  You will work through short video presentations and review linked resources at your own pace.  The session is designed to be efficient and to provide a framework upon which you can build.
