This professional development opportunity for faculty and staff is designed to broaden understanding about the significance of a land acknowledgement as a part of a larger goal of Indigenous visibility and settler harm reduction in higher education.

Participants are expected to attend BOTH days of the workshop.

Session 2:  October 28 from 3pm-5pm AND November 18 from 3pm-5pm

These sessions are designed to introduce concepts related to Indigenous sovereignty set goals to support Indigenous visibility on campus, and reflect on how to achieve these goals in collaboration with colleagues, students, and community members.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the goals of Indigenous visibility in higher education and for Indigenous communities
  • Set short and long term goals for settler harm reduction and Indigenous visibility in one's unit, office, or classroom
  • Begin language for a land acknowledgement and outline achievable actions that support Indigenous visibility and sovereignty

Who should participate?  In order to ensure we can come together to support each other and achieve the outcomes of this series, we will email you an intentions document for your reflection.

About the Facilitator, Dr. Andrea Riley Mukavetz

Andrea (Chippewa of Thames First Nation/Crane Clan) is an Assistant Professor in the Integrative, Religious, and Intercultural Studies Department. Her research and teaching interests are contemporary Anishinaabeg lived experiences, Michigan Indigenous history, decolonial theory and methodology, and Indigenous pedagogical practices. She is co-advisor for the Native American Studies Association and a member of the Native American Advisory Council. Any questions about this series can be directed to (rileymua@gvsu.edu).
