Group Exercise Class Descriptions
Our instructors are able to teach to all fitness levels, therefore, all class formats are designed to meet the needs of beginner, intermediate, and advanced participants. Classes designed for specific experience levels are indicated in the description.
All class formats are 45-minutes unless otherwise indicated.
Our certified instructors offer effective and safe workouts in a fun, friendly, and social atmosphere. Participants can burn calories, improve their fitness, experience the GVSU community, and manage stress in a positive way.
Passes are available for purchase to students, faculty, staff, and GVSU alumni who have a current fieldhouse membership.
All classes are on a drop-in basis; first-come, first-served with the exception of SPIN and TRX classes which require you to sign up for a bike or trainer.
This new and dynamic format is a fusion of posture combinations inspired by ballet, yoga, and Pilates. Isometric strength exercises are used to contract a specific set of muscles while using handheld weights, resistance bands, and Pilates balls are utilized to bring the burn with several reps.
In this ever-changing format, expect strength, cardio, agility, and endurance work to improve your overall fitness. Different equipment will be utilized in every class, such as dumbbells and agility ladders.
This is an energetic workout that includes strength, cardio, core, and more. Upbeat music is used to energize and drive our movements. Equipment may include a mat, stability ball, drumsticks, or weights.
Develop a strong core, gluteus, and arms by utilizing equipment and your own body weight during a combined strength and cardio workout! Weighted bars, hand weights, resistance bands, towels, mats, stability balls, and steps may be used.
Experience a fusion of all music genres to express yourself through dance and feel confident while doing so! Everyone in the class will be doing the exact same dance moves, you’re just able to add your own style and personality. No experience necessary for this class; you can’t get it wrong!
High Intensity Interval Training. With HIIT, you get an efficient workout that creates afterburn, so your body keeps using energy even after you’ve stopped training. Expect quick bursts of cardio followed by rest or active recovery.
A cardio and strength-based kickboxing class including both upper and lower body training. Expect kicks, punches, and drills! This class is perfect for anyone- beginner or expert!
This class includes cardio and strength circuits that work your whole body. Use various equipment and your own body weight to challenge your body and give your mind a mid-day break!
Use your breath and focus on alignment as you strengthen your core, and develop control as you build endurance, coordination, and balance. This is a great class that works your whole body without high-impact movements.
This new format introduces a combination of strength and choreography. Each movement of the class is driven by the beat of the music. You will work your whole body through muscle conditioning, cardio, and plyometric training. Tone your body using explosive movements and isometric movements.
Condition your entire body to improve all aspects of physical fitness. This is a cardiovascular and strength- based class for those wanting a challenge. Expect a workout that combines kickboxing, plyometrics, resistance training, and core work! Weighted bar, hand weights, resistance bands, towels, stability balls, mats, and steps may be used.
Tabata training is a unique and revolutionary approach to successfully lose weight and build muscle in minimal time. You not only burn calories during the exercise, but your body keeps burning extra calories for the next 24 to 48 hours. Expect high intensity bouts of exercise followed by short periods of rest.
Three dynamite formats packed into one intense class! It will be a combination of strength, cardio and core - but every week will be a surprise! SPIN® bikes, kettlebells, dumbbells, resistance bands, jump ropes, medicine balls and more may be utilized.
TurboKick® utilizes movements from kickboxing, boxing, and hip hop style to create a constant “party” while you workout. This fast paced, high-energy class is pre-choreographed and will keep you coming back for more!
This easy-to-follow, Latin and hip-hop inspired, calorie-burning, dance fitness class is a dynamic and exciting way to train the whole body. This class features aerobic, interval, and toning techniques to sculpt your body and have a blast while doing it. Try a new kind of workout...join the party with Zumba®!
Mind & Body
Mondays are hard, but our Feel Good Flow is here to help! Find a balance at the start of your week in this basic flow class. Let the stress of the week disappear as your step onto your mat and give 45-minutes to your mind and body.
Take your practice to the next level by discovering different ways to challenge your mind and body! This yoga practice will help you to advance to poses such as inversions and backbends. Once you are familiar with the basic poses, come join us to see how you can build your practice!
An energizing and strength-based practice using a set sequence of postures to stretch, strengthen, and detoxify the body while quieting your mind. You will build endurance as well as strength and flexibility in this class.
This is a vinyasa style class where postures are held longer to allow for time to understand and feel how the body should be aligned. Yoga mats, yoga blocks, yoga straps, and blankets will be available to participants for use in this class. This class is great for beginner to intermediate yogis.
Release stress in the middle of the week during this evening practice. Move through gentle flows that release tension and stress built up through the week. This class will give you the time to unwind and give your mind and body the attention it needs before bed.
In the yogic discipline, the morning is considered as a "divine time" and is when an individual's spiritual energy is at its peak. Breathe deeply and experience an energizing flow sequence with emphasis on strength, balance, alignment, along with breathing techniques. This class provides the perfect way to start your day grounded, focused and clear.
Vinyasa is a flowing, dynamic yoga practice that cultivates presence by connecting movement with breath. Most classes feature several elements of traditional yoga—including sun salutations, standing poses, preparation for arm balances, dynamic stretching, and pranayama (breathwork). This practice will build strength and aid balance, while reducing stress and increasing vitality.
Take a breath and relax during this 45-minute practice at GV’s Health Campus. This is a great chance to leave tension behind and let your mind be present on your mat. Work your whole body and focus on the good that comes when you take time for yourself.
Learn the form and names of basic poses in this beginner class. While you move through Downward dog, Sun Salutations, Warrior, and more, you can develop a comfort and find proper alignment in this practice. This class is great for beginners looking to learn and even more experienced yogis looking to get back to the basics.
Endurance SPIN® includes light to moderate resistance, short recovery times, higher fat metabolism, and a lower resting heart rate to challenge the cardiovascular system and build a foundation for endurance.
This class will involve increasing and decreasing the heart rate by following periods of intense activity with active recovery. Interval training is a critical component of any training program; you don’t want to miss out!
Highly recommended for those new riders to learn how to set up their bike, monitor exercise intensity, and use resistance and cadence to vary their workout intensity. This 45-minute tutorial class teaches safety for maximum fitness results. *Will be replaced by Low Intensity SPIN®halfway through the semester.
If you’re new to SPIN®, beginning or returning to an exercise program or just looking for a lower intensity, non-impact workout, this class is for you. With an extended warm up, and strategic movement pattern, you’ll gradually increase your heart rate. *Will replace Intro to SPIN® halfway through the semester.
SPIN® classes use a stationary indoor bike to create a simulated bike ride. The instructor will lead riders through hills, flats, intervals and more to create a safe, effective, and fun cardiovascular workout. Formats can range from strength, interval, to endurance based on the preference of the participants and instructor!
This combo class will consist of a quick and high intensity SPIN® ride, followed by some core work! Stationary bikes, med balls, dumbbells, and exercise balls will be used throughout the semester.
This fused SPIN® + Strength class promises to work all the major muscle groups in your body with strength training, while including an enjoyable ride for all fitness levels can enjoy! Equipment such as dumbbells, resistance bands, and kettlebells may be used.
Come get a taste of two formats! This class incorporates all that you love about a traditional SPIN® class, while including a yoga practice as well. Time for relaxation and meditation will be allowed at the end of the class.
Steady, consistent pedaling with moderate to heavy resistances to develop the lower body muscles and challenge the cardiovascular system to promote power. This class is ideal for becoming a stronger rider, as well as building to your already established fitness base.
Build your core, increase muscular strength and endurance, and work on your flexibility and balance with the TRX® Suspension trainer. TRX® training is effective for any fitness level as it focuses on using your body weight against gravity. Join us to have some fun on the suspension trainer and learn the 100’s of exercises you can do on just one piece of equipment!
TRX® Circuit is similar to a traditional TRX® class but you can expect to be always moving! Various fitness equipment, body weight exercises, and even the track will be used in this class!
Take it to the next level with TRX® Cardio + Core! Using the TRX® suspension trainers we will challenge and strengthen your core muscles, while incorporating cardio moves. Come ready for a high intensity and upbeat class!
This class will be a class focused on building strong upper body, lower body and core muscles all on the TRX® straps! Get ready to feel the burn!
