Participants examine the influence of social identity and implicit bias on leadership and reflect on the traits of shared equity leadership. Through case studies and exercises, they apply these concepts to real-world situations and develop personalized action plans. The session concludes with structured inquiry into systemic inequities in education, building skills to design and lead equity-focused change.

Donald (Don) Williams Sr., retired dean emeritus of minority affairs, died March 29, 2026. He was 89. Williams joined Grand Valley's staff in 1985 and retired in 2001.

A celebration of life service for Williams is scheduled for May 16, 1-3 p.m. The event will include a ceremony and luncheon.

These trends have also been clearly expressed on college campuses across the country, including at GVSU.

This session explores how we at GVSU can create welcoming environments for folks of all religious, spiritual, and secular backgrounds. Hosted by the Kaufman Interfaith Institute at Grand Valley State University, our conversation will emphasize the importance of remaining curious about worldviews other than our own, the challenges that arise as we navigate the meeting point of our various truths and commitments, and the centrality of humility and self-awareness in respectful interactions.

Through stories, data, and reflection, this session encourages participants to think about how identity, belief, and belonging intersect on campus. We will highlight the value of cultural humility approaching others with curiosity and openness rather than assumptions and offer practical tools for inclusive event planning, dietary accommodations, and religious observance within the classroom and without.

Ultimately, we hope to invite all Lakers to move beyond tolerance toward genuine engagement and interaction, helping build a culture where all students, faculty, and staff feel seen, respected, and supported.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will be able to:

  • Gain a working understanding of interfaith engagement and pluralism as promoted by the Kaufman Interfaith Institute.
  • Develop insights into how religious, secular, and spiritual identities shape Laker experiences on campus.

Together, well reflect on real questions, tensions, and moments of growth weve encountered in our roles. What feels challenging or confusing about affirming LGBTQIA+ students and colleagues? Where are we still learning? What stories shape how we show up? This space centers vulnerability, humility, and collective insight.

Whether you're feeling unsure, affirmed, or somewhere in between, this session invites honest dialogue and reflection, with no need to have it all figured out.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will be able to:

  • Articulate personal and institutional challenges in applying LGBTQIA+ affirming practices
  • Engage with peers to unpack questions or uncertainties in an open-minded space
  • Identify one action or mindset shift to integrate into their practice
  • Gain confidence in navigating discomfort and complexity with humility

]]> https://www.gvsu.edu/events/master-of-public-health-mph-virtual-information-se-537036.htm 9177C0E3-7E72-E544-047DD6ADDB26860D academic admissions collegeofhealthprofessions graduateschool hybrid mph publichealth sih virtual webinar TORNADO / OUTDOOR WARNING SIREN TESTING Fri, 05 Jun 2026 12:00:00 EDT GVSU’s Allendale campus, and all communities within Ottawa County, will complete monthly planned testing of the tornado warning siren system each first  Friday of the month at noon.  The test will consist of a 1 to 3 minute steady tone.  In the event of actual severe weather, the test will be postponed.

This is informational only.  No immediate action is required.  In the event of an actual weather emergency, members of the GVSU community should already be aware of safe areas on campus.  When the sirens sound, please make yourself aware of the closest designated tornado safety area.  Safety areas are identified on signs located in the interior hallways on the lowest floor of all buildings on campus.  For a complete list of safety locations visit: http://www.gvsu.edu/shelter

This monthly testing occurs on the first Friday of each month, April through October under the authority of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office – Division of Emergency Management.
