About the program:
Ormskirk, United Kingdom — On this GVSU study abroad program, students visit the physical settings of some of the most important authors in the English literary tradition, including Shakespeare, Wordsworth, and current poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to work on their own writing as they experience and explore the United Kingdom.
We are in England for 4 weeks. We study 4 major authors, one each week, with classes Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, we take a trip to a place that is special for that week’s author. We will visit a Medieval castle in Wales and a Medieval Cathedral when we study Chaucer. We will visit Stratford-Upon-Avon to visit Shakespeare’s birthplace and see a play by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Finally, we will visit the beautiful Lake District for a hike when we read the Romantic Poetry of William Wordsworth and to Liverpool when we read Carol Ann Duffy’s book of poems called “The World’s Wife.”
By living in dormitories at Edge Hill University alongside British students, you will be immersed in the culture of the United Kingdom. There will also be opportunities to visit classrooms and observe English teaching in the UK system.
Students have every weekend free for travel, and classes on weekdays usually end at 1 PM so there is ample time for trips to Liverpool and/or Manchester, shopping, eating in pubs, etc.
