The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship is hosting two workshops presented by Radha Ganesan of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University. The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science empowers scientists and health professionals to communicate complex topics in clear, vivid, and engaging ways; leading to improved understanding by the public, media, patients, elected officials, and others outside of their own discipline.
Inspired by Alan Alda’s statement that, “… real listening is the willingness to let the other person change you,” this interactive session will introduce you to the Alda Method™, a sequence of improvisational theater techniques developed to help you speak more vividly and expressively about your research. The Alda Method™ helps you to create common ground and use conversational language to foster more genuine connections with your audience. The techniques introduced hours will help you focus on listening, relating, ordering information and defining meaningful goals to make your message stick. Space is limited. Workshop participants should also attend the introductory workshop. Preference is given to current faculty and student researchers in OURS summer research programs. Additional seats will be extended to active STEM research faculty and student research collaborators.
