Michigan Pioneers of Spirituality and Health: Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and John E. Fetzer. LIB 100 / 201 APPROVED!
Date and TimeThursday, March 29, 2018
1:00 p.m. - 2:15 p.m.
- Mary Idema Pew Library » Multipurpose Room
Based on his two recent books in the field of spirituality and health, Professor Brian C. Wilson will highlight two famous Michigananders: Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and John E. Fetzer. Dr. Kellogg, the inventor of flaked breakfast cereals and the creator of the Battle Creek Sanitarium, championed “biologic living,” a lifestyle focused on the health of mind, body, and spirit and a forerunner of holistic healing. John Fetzer was a media mogul who devoted his fortune to developing “energy medicine,” purporting to use spiritual energies in healing. Professor Wilson will locate both figures within the historical debates in medicine between vitalistic and mechanical theories of life, and he will discuss how these two very different persons contributed to the recent boom in alternative medicine in this country.
