Hair Talk: Understanding Hair Unlike Yours will be an informative discussion on the importance of embracing and learning about hair and its variations from person to person and culture to culture. Hair is a gateway to femininity, identity, freedom, beauty and ultimately individuality. With this event, the aim is to provide LIB 100/ LIB 201 students with an event that in inviting into the African American culture for Black History Month. With that being said, we will have hair specialists and stylists from the Grand Rapids community to engage the Grand Valley community into the various scales of hair.
We will address the discrimination of the variations of hair among all of the ethnic groups present as speakers. At the end of the event, there will be a Question/Comment portion to allow students to ask questions while understanding and provide students with a safe place to participate in a discussion on how race, ethnicity and hair affects various cultural groups on Grand Valley’s Campus which will increase the odds of students becoming empowered members of society. To conclude the event, there will be a Soul Food dinner served to top off the engagement of African American culture.
