GVSU School of Communications Presents the Robert Mayberry COMM-UNITY Conversation

The Robert Mayberry COMM-UNITY Series is pleased to host its first speaker Marisa Kwiatkowski, the IndyStar reporter and GVSU Journalism alumna (Class of 2005) who broke the Larry Nassar / USA Gymnastics story exposing that children were being abused in gymnastics gyms, but no one knew how widespread the problem was until now.

With this daytime event on Monday, March 26th from 1-2pm at the Linn Maxwell Keller Black Box Theatre in the Haas Center for Performing Arts, the COMM-UNITY series invites GVSU students to engage in an intimate dialogue surrounding the storyteller and her responsibilty for victim advocacy as an investigative journalist.

In addition to this event on the Allendale Campus, Ms. Kwiatkowski will also speak on Monday, March 26th at 6pm at the Loosemore Auditorium downtown in a community Q&A session. Attendance to both events are free and they are both open to the public. 

These events are co-sponsored with the School of Communications, by the GVSU Center for Women and Gender Equity and Inclusion, the Equity Planning and Compliance office, within the Division of Inclusion and Equity, the Center for Women in Transition (Holland), and the GVSU Department of Public Safety.

Speaker Bio: Marisa is an investigative reporter for The Indianapolis Star. She handles investigations relating to social services issues, including child abuse and neglect, poverty, elder abuse, human trafficking, domestic violence and access to mental health services. Marisa has earned more than 40 journalism awards throughout her career, including Indiana Journalist of the Year, IRE's Tom Renner Award, a Sigma Delta Chi Award in public service, the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism and the Will Rogers Humanitarian Award. Prior to The Star, Marisa worked for The Times of Northwest Indiana and media outlets in South Carolina and Michigan. She also serves as president of the Indiana Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and vice president of Girls on the Run of Central Indiana.

About the series: The Robert Mayberry COMM-UNITY Series celebrates Mayberry’s academic vision of diverse academic programs forging a productive connection for students and for the Grand Valley community. The series features public intellectuals, practitioners, and alumni who have benefitted and/or engage in the kind of cross-disciplinary education and practice that leads to the betterment of localities across the US and the world.
