The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) - West Michigan presents Fall in Love with STEM, workshops and activities for middle school students (STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering & Math).  Please register at the links below.

There are THREE venues where activities will be held on Saturday, February 10:

9 a.m. noon at the GVSU Allendale campus (for Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics)

9 a.m. - noon at the GVSU Grand Rapids campus (for Cell and Molecular Biology, and Engineering)

1 p.m. -  4 p.m. Grand Rapids Community College (for Astronomy, Biology, Geology, Engineering, and Mathematics)

GVSU ALLENDALE campus: Padnos Hall of Science, 9 a.m. to noon

PAD 142: Geology Curio Museum (Geology)
Drop by the Geology Department and take a look at some of the cool items that we have in our collection! Neat and unique minerals, rocks and fossils will be on display.

PAD 205: Colors, Shapes, Connections, Bubbles and Math (Mathematics)
Explore a variety of fun math games and logic puzzles, and learn how mathematics applies to household wiring, constructing buildings, soccer and bubbles.

PAD 206: Bright Ideas Sound Like Fun (Physics)
Sound and light are two of the main ways we sense the world around us, so come learn about their creation and behavior!  Color vision and optical illusions will also be explored.

PAD 259: Biological Inspirations (Biology)
Nature inspires art! But art also aids in biological understanding. Explore the natural world and use your internal creativity to discover your passion for biology!

PAD 376: Melting your Heart with Chemistry (Chemistry)
How much energy is in a candy heart? These and other chemistry topics will be explored in this intriguing workshop.

GVSU - Allendale Registration form

GVSU PEW Campus (downtown Grand Rapids), 9 a.m. to noon, Cook-Devos Center for Health Sciences (301 Michigan NE GR 49503)

CHS 477: DNA Detectives (Cell and Molecular Biology)
What is DNA and what does it do? Learn how DNA is used in genetic testing. Also, extract DNA from a banana and bring it home in a test tube!

CHS 477: Design Challenge Mystery (Engineering)
Details to be revealed at the event, but students will learn how collaboration and interaction is the key to successful innovation. Oh and have fun along the way!

GVSU - Pew Registration form

Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC), 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Calkins Science Center, First Floor, Grand Rapids Community College, 226 Bostwick Ave NE (Next to Ford Fieldhouse)

Artistic Robots (Engineering)
Become an engineer by designing and building a robot that draws! Part of the fun is altering your robot to make it draw whatever your imagination desires. Circles, dots, and more: you get to decide because you get to build it!

The Eyes of a Paleontologist (Geology)
How many fossils can you identify in a fossil hash? Learn the tools of the geologists trade while identifying fossils that swam in oceans 460 million years ago!

Mapping the Solar System (Astronomy)
Explore the sizes of objects in our solar system and the distances between them. Create a three-dimensional model of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, make a take-home map of the planet orbits in our solar system, and fly through space with the power of WorldWide Telescope!

Mathematical Magic and Mysteries (Mathematics)
Come have a mathematician read your mind! Then see if you can figure out how to read minds too using mathematics! Solve some fun mathematical puzzles and learn some magic tricks that you can take home and show your friends and family.

Who Stole the iPod (Biology)
Someone has stolen Jerrell's ipod at his work. A sticky organic residue from the thief's lunch has been left behind. Learn about the biology of food (and your own body) and use this knowledge to figure out which Jerrell's co-workers stole his ipod!
