The Environmental Perils of Our Humanitarian Present will explore environmental problems, community responses, and policy debates around environmental ethics and justice issues – particularly historical and present race, class, and equity implications of environmental problems and policies. Panel speakers (3) will discuss and critically analyze philosophies, frameworks, and strategies underlying environmental justice movements and the struggles of marginalized groups - African American, Latino American, Asian American, and Native American communities.  Speakers include Kyle Whyte, Levi Gardner, and Elizabeth Arnold.  

Speaker Bios:

Kyle Whyte-
Timnick Chair in the Humanities and Associate Professor of Philosophy and Community Sustainability at Michigan State University, member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, considerable research and advocacy on the moral, ethical, and political issues concerning climate policy and Indigenous peoples
Elizabeth Arnold-
Associate Professor of Anthropology at GVSU, 2018-2019 Padnos/Sarosik Endowed Professor of Civil Discourse on environmental issues and human impact, significant research and fieldwork as an anthropologist, environmental archaeologist, and zooarchaeologist
Levi Gardner-
Founder and Executive Director of Urban Roots, M.S. in Community Sustainability and Ecological Food and Farming Systems, GVSU Environmental Studies part-time faculty member and former manager of the Sustainable Agriculture Project, certified Permaculture Designer
