When you hear the word “diversity,” who comes to mind? People of different genders, races, ethnicities, and sexualities? People whose experiences differ from your own? Another, perhaps less often considered, facet of diversity includes individuals with disabilities.
When considering individuals with disabilities, do you think of someone who utilizes a wheelchair or seeing-eye dog? What about those who act, think, or process information in unique ways, such as individuals with autism or dyslexia? Have you considered those who experience physical or mental health challenges, such as diabetes or depression?
Individuals with disabilities are themselves an incredibly complex and diverse group, as each individual experiences their disability and overcomes barriers in a way that is unique to that individual. Many individuals with disabilities, both visible and invisible, are marginalized by society’s perceived notion of there being a “normal” or “right” way of achieving a goal or living their lives; however, we know that diversity in every aspect of life can only serve to enrich and connect through the shared human experience.
We invite you to attend DSR 101: Inclusion and Accessibility. The purpose of this program, as part of the of GVSU Disability Support Resources’ mission, is to educate the university community on disability issues. Our topic addresses the challenges faced by your peers, and provides etiquette, inclusion, and advocacy advice to the friends and allies of individuals with disabilities. By discovering our similarities and celebrating our differences, all attending this program will gain a greater perspective through which to connect with the world around them – and to better understand the diverse array of individuals they meet along the way.
