Culture & Coffee: Navigating Brazil
Date and TimeWednesday, August 15, 2018

From the “Lungs of the Earth” - the Amazon Rainforest, to the “Devil’s Throat” - Iguazu Falls; from the “Christ the Redeemer” statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro, to the “Land of Drizzle” - São Paulo, Brazil is known for its many beautiful characteristics. This country never ceases to fascinate its residents and visitors with the staggering beauty of its jungle, extensive ocean shores, exuberant samba moves, glitzy soccer kicks and much more. As the only Portuguese speaking country in the Americas, Brazil is sharply distinct from the rest of the continent. Yet, the old colonial days have long set the cornerstone of this cosmopolitan culture.
For many years, Brazil’s economy has been rapidly booming due to the rise of its industrial sector, which contributed 21% of GDP in 2017. Although it is now the world’s eighth-largest economy and a crucial member of BRICS countries, Brazil is struggling to recover from a 2015 recession which negatively impacted commodity prices. The Brazilian government proposed economic reforms in 2016 in hopes of slowing government spending, aiding the 3.7% of the population who live under poverty line, and reducing barriers to foreign investment. As one of the strongest emerging economies in the world, Brazil has proven its potential opportunities for international businesses.
