Benjamin Britten: A Century of Song celebrates the 100th birthday of the British composer universally recognized for his tremendous contribution to 20th century music. With hundreds of works for virtually every instrument in his musical output, Britten is most remembered for his vocal works. In A Century of Song, soprano Jessica Louise coe and pianist Robert Byrens will present pieces from Britten's song repertoire, beginning with excerpts from two song cycles for soprano, On This Island and The Poet's Echo, by which the audience gets a sense of the composer's diverse musical language. The recital finishes with a group of folk song settings, which, in these arrangements, embody the wonderful paradox of Britten's music: a highly experimental style that pushes conventional expectations while at the same time remains easy to listen to and enjoy.
