Research Interests
Motivating children to read is the linchpin in my research. I am currently part of a team that includes author Sue Stauffacher, Grand Rapids Public School System administrators and the dedicated teachers at three urban elementary schools in researching the question: Does relevant, appropriate, quality, visual literature specifically geared toward urban children reading below grade level motivate them to read?  Sue Stauffacher has written two editions of a comic book, the Wireman (based upon the unknown Philadelphia metal sculptor), and they have been illustrated by local artists to look like the children and the architecture of the Grand Rapids schools. 

The plot follows the hero design described by mythologist Joseph Campbell.  Strong and sophisticated illustrations build upon the visual cueing system used to help children comprehend text. Children learn in different ways and this comic represents an attempt to widen the number sitting at the literacy table. This year, the work was supported by a $15,000 Grant from the Dyer Ives Foundation.
