Teachable Majors/Minors
To enter the GTC program you must have or be willing to acquire an approved "teachable" major (and teachable minor for secondary certification students) prior to beginning the GTC program.
- Teachable majors/minors are REQUIRED for the Secondary GTC program, allowing you to teach in that subject area in 6th through 12th grade.
- Teachable majors/minors are NOT required for the Elementary GTC program. In order to teach in Pre-K through 6th grade, you need to hold a Bachelor's degree in any field of study.
The GTC program is designed as an intensive, one year, full time teacher training program for adults who have:
- completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited college
- acquire an approved "teachable" major (and teachable minor)
- meet other admission requirements.

Steps for selecting a Teachable Major/Minor
To verify if you have completed the coursework required for your chosen teachable major and/or minor, or coursework that needs to be completed, please complete the following steps:
- Choose a teachable major and minor (see list of majors/minors below).
- Apply for admission to Grand Valley as a degree-seeking undergraduate transfer student.
- Individuals who completed their undergraduate degree at GVSU can skip to step #5.
- Request official transcripts from all undergraduate institutions you have previously enrolled at be sent to GVSU’s Admissions office.
- Once admitted to GVSU as a degree-seeking undergraduate student, you will receive an automated email inviting you to register for a transfer student orientation. You will need to register for the orientation and pay the orientation fee, which covers the cost of advising services. In the notes section, include that you are a prospective GTC student.
- Call the CLAS Academic Advising Center at (616) 331-8585.
- Share that you are interested in the GTC program and have received your official admission to GVSU as a degree seeking undergraduate student.
- Share your full name, G-number, and contact information.
- Request that a planned program be completed for the teachable major and minor (if secondary).
- In four to six weeks, a copy of the planned program(s) will be sent to you via email.
- Call CLAS Academic Advising Center at (616) 331-8585 to schedule a one-on-one advising and orientation session. This should be scheduled with the professional advisor who provided the planned program for your teaching major and/or minor.
- Student may register for courses at GVSU after their advising and orientation meeting.

Elementary Teachable Majors/Minor (PreK-6th grade)
In 2022, Grand Valley State University revised the Graduate Teacher Certification Elementary Education program to meet new requirements from the Michigan Department of Education.
- Teachable majors/minors are no long required for the Elementary GTC program.
- In order to teach in PreK-6th grade, you need to hold a Bachelor's degree in any field of study.
