Description

Designing Motivational Math Classrooms Ilana Seidel Horn, Vanderbilt University Participating in math class often feels socially risky to students, and staying silent feels safer. In this keynote, a framework for teachers to use design thinking in their classrooms to change students’ risk-benefit assessment around their inclass engagement will be presented. Come and learn how six experienced secondary mathematics teachers built their teaching in ways that attended to core issues of motivation, including belongingness, meaningfulness, competence, accountability, and autonomy. Each of these ideas are discussed and illustrated with designs from real classrooms. the Keynote is offered at 11 am or 2:15 pm. Attendees will receive a copy of Ilana Horn's book, Motivated
