Grand Rapids teachers win $15,000 grant
June 05, 2018
Kaleigh Vanderkamp has a knack for earning grants, and she recently won her largest one yet.
Kaleigh, a second-grade teacher at William C. Abney Academy, helped the school win a $15,000 joint grant from the Grand Rapids Griffins and Farm Bureau Insurance to completely renovate and remodel the school's media center (pictured above). According to Kaleigh, the project will include soft construction, updated technology, and new books and materials for the school's library. The project is scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the 2018-2019 school year.
Students at William C. Abney Academy are used to finding exciting and innovative resources around the school and in Kaleigh's classroom thanks to her dedication to applying for grants. Many of the key educational items in her room - including iPads, dry-erase tables, books, and curriculum materials - have been purchased with grant funds earned through Donorschoose and other grant opportunities.
What's her secret? Kaliegh says she simply applies for every grant she comes across. "What's the worst that could happen?" she asked. "They tell me 'no'? That's not too bad at all."
