Good News From Our Schools (September 2020)

-- For two schools, the first day of class also marked their first day serving students as GVSU-authorized charter public schools. Congratulations to Fostering Leadership Academy and Michigan Preparatory Virtual School on kicking off your inaugural year with us!

-- Leaders at Covenant House Michigan detailed how the organization was able to reshape its support for at-risk youth as they dealt with COVID-19 closures. Many of the individuals who turn to Covenant House are also students at the three Covenant House Academies in Detroit that are authorized by GVSU.

-- Detroit Prep teacher Lauren Ortega was highlighted and shared advice for how teachers can create community for their students as they prepared to restart the school year. Ortega has been known for her ability to connect with students and was selected this spring as Michigan’s winner of the National University System Sanford Teacher Award, which recognizes educators who help their students grow emotionally.

-- Light of the World Academy was featured in the news for turning their hallways into "roads" in order to promote social distancing within the building while simultaneously teaching them about traffic symbols and laws.
