The CSO Welcomes New School Consultant
July 07, 2021
The GVSU Charter Schools Office is excited to welcome Teri Quimby to the team as a School Consultant. Teri is an accomplished author, attorney, speaker, and compliance consultant with experience in public policy and regulation.
Teri formerly served as Commissioner of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission from 2011-2019, appointed by the Governor of Michigan. The Commission oversaw alcoholic beverage traffic in the state. While Commissioner, Teri helped transform and streamline the Commission’s business practices, with the Commission receiving international recognition by winning the 2016 Process Excellence Network Award for “Best Process Improvement Project Under 90 Days.”
Also, Teri has earned several personal awards. In 2017, she was listed among Crain’s Business Detroit’s “Notable Women Lawyers in Michigan” and received the Best Practices Award from the National Association of Licensing and Compliance Professionals (NALCP) for Extraordinary Innovation, Dedication and Leadership.
Prior to her role as Commissioner, Teri served as Deputy Director & Senior Legal Counsel of the House Majority Policy Office of the Michigan House of Representatives. During her tenure, she drafted legislation and facilitated consensus with interest groups and others to drive good public policy formation. She advised caucus members on environmental policy, commerce and economic development initiatives, and public utility issues.
With extensive experience serving on boards, her first piece of advice for any board member is to make informed decisions. “There are always more questions to ask, even when you get to the point of information saturation,” she said. “If you are making informed decisions, you will know when enough questions have been asked to obtain sufficient information to form a sound basis for a decision. Understanding that basis is very important.”
“It’s all about dialogue and bringing people together. Once you get people talking, a lot of good things can happen from there.”
Teri earned her LLM degree in Corporate Law: Regulatory Analysis and Compliance from Delaware Law School at Widener University, adding to her JD from Cooley Law School at Western Michigan University and her BA from James Madison College at Michigan State University. She is admitted to the Michigan and Illinois Bars and holds certifications for general civil, domestic relations and special education mediation as well as several regulatory certificates concerning public utilities and the environment.
Outside of her work, Teri is passionate about writing and SCUBA diving.
