Robert Kimball, Ed.D.
Associate Vice President for Charter Schools
Robert T. Kimball, Ed.D., is Grand Valley State University’s fourth Associate Vice President for Charter Schools.
During the past 15 years, Rob Kimball has been a middle and high school teacher in Michigan traditional public schools, education researcher, web startup founder, education consultant, and a wildland fire fighter. Prior to his appointment in 2017, Kimball was the deputy director of charter schools at GVSU where he lead the design and development of Mi-School.net, a web based GIS mapping application for understanding school operations within their communities, and GVSU’s “community first” new school launch process.
He is a 2004 honors graduate of the University of Michigan. He then earned a Master of Arts (MA) in learning sciences from Northwestern University (Chicago, IL). Kimball also holds an EdS in curriculum and supervision from GVSU and an EdD in education administration and leadership from Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI). Fellowship experiences include Education Pioneers (2008) and the National Association of Charter School Authorizers Leaders program (2013). He completed executive leadership programs at Harvard University in charter school operations and strategic data management. In 2011, he was nationally recognized by Splashlife.com as one of the top 30 education innovators under 30 years old.
Kimball is a recognized charter school expert and has published articles on student mobility and charter school authorizing in higher education institutions.
He is active in the community serving on a number of boards and is a graduate of Leadership Grand Rapids (2012).
Kimball is married to Monica (Allard) Kimball who is also a graduate of Grand Valley State University (2004 & 2005). They have two children, Walter and Charles.
