Message to Faculty/Staff from President Mantella, April 14, 2020

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As you know, the COVID-19 virus caused the postponement of our in-person April commencement ceremonies. We have just finalized special ways and dates to honor our Class of 2020, and it is important we come together, how we can and when we can, to mark this milestone in our graduates’ lives. Our new date to hold this traditional ceremony is October 10, 2020, at the Van Andel Arena. If that date does not work for some graduates, they have the option to attend the regularly scheduled December 12, 2020, commencement.

I encourage you to make plans to acknowledge these graduates’ unique journey to their degrees and attend the specially scheduled ceremony in October. These graduates pursued their education, even as campus life, and indeed the world, changed dramatically. Your efforts helped them achieve their goals, and we need to gather to celebrate all the work that went into this moment.

We are also marking what would have been our April commencement in a unique way. There will be a Graduate Celebration Watch Party on Grand Valley’s Facebook page, April 24 at 7 p.m.

There is a website with updated commencement information www.gvsu.edu/commencement

I am proud of our students and proud of the way all of us are working harder than ever to show what it means to be a part of the Grand Valley community.

Sincerely,
Philomena V. Mantella, President
