Cybersecurity Student-Athlete Mike Morawski Excels in the Classroom and on the Field
April 06, 2025
The GVSU College of Computing celebrates all of our student-athletes for National Student-Athlete Day! We sat down with one of our student-athletes, Michael Morawski, to talk about his journey to Grand Valley and his time at the university.
Morawski played multiple sports in high school, but baseball was always his favorite sport. After attending a Grand Valley baseball camp and receiving an offer, he decided that he wanted to play baseball at GVSU. He joined the team as a pitcher and hitter, but now he solely pitches.
When he first got to Allendale, he decided to follow in his family’s footsteps and study cybersecurity.
“My dad is in the IT field, and my brother, who is two years older than me, is also in the same field. He is getting his master’s this year in cybersecurity. He has always pushed me towards that direction, and during my junior and senior year of high school I told him I was really interested in computers and IT.”
Overall, Morawski said his experience has been great in the College of Computing. He has really enjoyed his internship experience and the project-based learning structure. He interned with ADMIS, an investor services company.
“I enjoy project-based learning and working in groups. Practicing skills around others and learning how to communicate with different people can go a long way. That is something I have done throughout my internship.”
For most student-athletes, balancing sports and academics is one of the biggest challenges. Morawski said he has found a good structure for his own schedule. His approach allows him to focus on what needs to be done now, what can wait, and what can be cut out altogether.
“I cut out a lot of the things that can wait. I do homework throughout the week so when we have games on the weekend I don’t have to worry about it.”
Morawski hopes to enter the risk management or policy side of cybersecurity. He interned with ADMIS, an investor services company out of Chicago, and it was here that he gained interest in managing risk through the structure of cybersecurity safety plans.
Although Morawski is injured this season, him and the baseball team have high expectations. They currently hold a 23-9 record after a successful 3-1 home stand versus Davenport this past weekend.
