Computer Science Student Marcos Sanson Awarded with Prestigious Goldwater Scholarship

Marcos Sanson, a Grand Valley junior studying computer science, was recently awarded a Goldwater Scholarship! This prestigious achievement sees Marcos as one of 14 students from the state of Michigan awarded this scholarship this year, with more than 5,000 students applying nationally.

Sanson’s outstanding research and academic accomplishments helped him stand out amongst other students. Dr. Jared Moore, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Associate Professor, wrote about Sanson’s drive in his recommendation letter, saying, “I was impressed with his ambition as he reached out to me to discuss some of my recent research in evolutionary robotics. It was clear that he had put in effort to look at my research beforehand asking specific questions about the work.” Dr. Moore also described Sanson as diligent, engaged, and effective.

The scholarship was named after senator Barry Goldwater, who wanted to help foster careers in science, engineering, and mathematics. Goldwater scholarships are merit-based and designed for sophomores and juniors. The goal is to invest in students long-term, with hopes that many will continue their education at the graduate and doctoral level. Marcos is extremely excited about this opportunity.

Marcos said, “It’s cool to represent Grand Valley in a way. Only a few students are chosen from any university… so you only have a small group of students picked.”

One of the benefits of this scholarship is having access to a community that helps Goldwater scholars connect with one another, something Marcos is excited to be a part of. He said he has already met a few great connections, including students from his field of study. Goldwater scholars are also able to connect with professors and academics, helping them find exemplary researchers with similar interests.

Marcos also recently accepted an internship with the Air Force Research Laboratory. He met another student through the Goldwater community who is a part of the same internship program, showcasing just how valuable the opportunity is for him.

Marcos concluded, “It’s fun to talk to other Goldwater scholars and tell them I’m from Michigan, and I’ll have to explain where my university is. It’s cool to explain that and be a student from Grand Valley.”
