WYOMING, MI – The GVSU Rifle Club recently wrapped up the 2021-2022 Snow County English Match season, hosted by the SEMNO High Masters Shooting Team. In total, five Lakes competed in the series. The course of fire for each match is 60 shots, in prone position, at 50 feet on the metric target. There are six matches; however, the season aggregate is determined by the highest four matches.
Sophomore Katheryn Karas was the top junior/collegiate shooter in the series this season.

WYOMING, MI – The Grand Valley State University Rifle Club participated in three Orion Scoring System Monthly Virtual Matches in March. Orion's Monthly Virtual Matches are a fun way for users to compare scores with other teams and shooters from across the country. The air pistol match consisted of 40 shots at 10 meters, the air rifle competition consisted of 60 shots also at 10 meters, and the smallbore competition consisted of 60 shots fired in prone, standing, and kneeling position at 50 feet.
Lakers comprised four of the 23 entries in the air pistol event. Leading the way was John Martin (Holly, Michigan). Martin posted a top stage of 94 (out of 100) on his way to a 358 (out of 400). His score was good for second place overall. Tristan Bruizeman (West Olive, Michigan) shot a 314 for 15th place. Kathryn Karas (Carleton, Michigan) shot 301 for 18th. As a team, the trio was fourth overall with a combined score of 973 (out of 1200). Connor Wardrop (Grand Rapids, Michigan) was 21st with a score of 291.

Leading the way in the air rifle event was Karas. She posted a score of 588.9 (out of 654), good for sixth place overall. She was joined by Cassie Coulston-Gerigk (Wayne, Michigan), and Alexander Straith (West Bloomfield, Michigan) in posting a team score of 1758.1 (out of 1962), good for second place overall. Coulston-Gerigk shot a 584.7 for seventh place. Straith was eighth with a 584.5. A second air rifle team of Bruizeman, Wardrop, and Mahmoud Salih (Caledonia, Michigan) finished in fourth place.

In smallbore, Karas led the Lakers with a score of 548 (out of 600). The score was good for third place. Coulston-Gerigk finished fourth, with a score of 546. Straith rounded out the team score with a 530, finishing fifth. Together, they finished in first place as a team with 1624 (out of 1800).

WYOMING, MICHIGAN- Nine competitors, including four alumni, competed in the 8th Annual Alumni Match at the Grand Rapids Rifle and Pistol Club on April 14th. The match faced members of the current team against former members in three position smallbore rifle, standing air rifle, and air pistol.
In the smallbore competition, the current team compiled a score of 786 (out of 900). The current team had contributing scores shot by Alexander Straith (271), Cassie Coulston-Gerigk (267), and Katheryn Karas (248). Tristan Bruizeman (245) and John Martin (208) were alternates. The alumni team posted 795 points to win the smallbore match. Alumni scoring team members included Cameron Zwart (275), April Chernoby (264), and Adam Gleason (256). The match format was 10 shots each in prone, standing, and kneeling positions on the metric target. Gleason was permitted to shoot on the conventional target, since he last shot smallbore in 2008.
In the air rifle competition, the current team complied a score of 648 (out of 872). The current team had contributing scores from Straith (331.5) and Karas (316.5). The alumni team, with Chernoby (322.4) and Zwart (315.2) shot a 637.6. The match consisted of 40 shots in standing position. Although precision class rifles were used, no other gear was permitted.
For the first time in the history of the event, air pistol was added. The current team dominated the event, 1147-959. Martin (325), Bruizeman (286), Karas (281), and Coulston-Gerigk (255) fired the contributing team scores for the current team. Straith (184) was an alternate. The alumni team had contributing scores from Zwart (277), Gerry Cooke (272), Gleason (217), and Chernoby (193). Cooke, Gleason, Chernoby had no prior air pistol experience.
In addition to shooting, all competitors enjoyed pizza provided by Leroy McCormick. Cooke was the lone charter club member present. Chernoby and Zwart continue their streak of shooing in every alumni match since inception. This was the first alumni match for Gleason.

WYOMING, MICHIGAN – The GVSU Pistol Club recently wrapped up the Orion National Air Pistol League. Ten teams competed in the league this season. Each match of the nine-match season consisted of 60 shots unsupported, from the standing position, fired with an .177 caliber air pistol. Each shot was scored in integer, allowing for a maximum score of 10 points per shot and 600 points per competitor in each weekly game. The top four individual scores per team were dynamically added together to constitute the team score for that week's game. Members of the Laker team were joined by others from their home range to represent Grand Rapids Rifle & Pistol Club in the league this season. Overall, the team finished in sixth place in the league with a 5-4 record. All the Laker entries set personal bests during the league season, including John Martin, who set an all time Laker record with a score of 542.

WYOMING, MICHIGAN – The GVSU Rifle Club recently concluded the National Rifle League (VT Winter Postal League) this month. The league was comprised of 33 teams and 265 individuals this season. Competitors reside throughout the United States. The league consisted of 10 postal matches beginning in January. A postal match is a competition in which competitors fire separately on their home ranges and exchange scores. The top four shooters from each team contribute towards the overall team score. This season, the Lakers had four individuals participate in the league. All shot air rifle (standing). The course of fire was 40 shots fired at 10 meters.
GVSU finished 16th overall in the team standings. The club finished in sixth place in the Central Division of the Western Conference. In total, the team amassed 14,171 (out of 16,000) during the season. Chico Rod & Gun Club (California) set a league record with 15,913 to finish in first place.
This was the first time the Lakers fielded a full team in the league. The team earned “Rookie Team” of the year honors.

Coulston-Gerigk earned recognition as a “Top Shots” for finishing in the top 10 in air rifle in the Western Conference. She finished in ninth place. Straith just missed the list, finishing in 11th place.

Permanent link for Swim Meet - MSU on March 30, 2022
On February 26th the GVSU swim club traveled to Michigan State University for the MSUSC Spring Invitational. It was their last meet of the season before the Nationals meet. Out of the eight teams that attended Grand Valley placed fifth with 189 points. The women's team scored 142 placing 3rd overall and the men's team scored 47 finishing in eighth place. Freshman, Rachel Patterson, had some great swims at her first swim meet of the season. She made a National cut in her 100 backstroke (1:09.40), 50 freestyle (27.20), 100 freestyle (1:00.30), and her 50 backstroke split for the woman’s 200 medley relay (31.33). Patterson earned us a total of 22 points in all of her individual events combined. Another freshman, Jay Patterson (No Jay and Rachel are not related) had some stellar swims that also landed him two Nationals cuts. One in his 50 freestyle (22.85) and another one in his 50 butterfly (25.30). Jay earned us a total of 23 points. The freshman of this meet pulled through. Another freshman Brianna Potter attended the MSU meet and it was the first meet they swam in of the season. Potter went into this meet with no times but left with some killer times. Needless to say, everyone did a phenomenal job and it was a great meet to end the season. The next stop is nationals April 8th-April 10th. We wish our nationals team of Jonah Cox, Dom Ferracciolo, Skylar Gottschalk, Veronica Lidy, Erin Marshall, Jay Patterson, Rachel Patterson, and Shaun Walkowiak the best of luck as they finish out their season.

The GVSU swim club made the two-hour drive to Sturgis, MI for the Laker Invitational. It was the GVSU swim club's first and only home meet of the 2021-2022 season. The theme was Hawaiian and our swimmers pulled through on that theme. Leis, bucket hats, and flower shirts were worn by our swimmers as we prepared for a great meet. The Lakers crushed it and won the meet with a whopping 1,253 points against Western Michigan’s swim club and Central’s swim club. The women’s 200 medley relay of Erin Marshall, Skylar Gottschalk, Anna Cornell, and Rosie Champion started strong with a first-place finish. Allison Shenefield had an amazing swim with a first-place finish in her 100 freestyle (59.36) that landed her a National time. Shenefield also swam a National’s cut in her 100 IM (1:09.05) with yet again another first-place finish. Veronica Lidy also made two nationals cuts in her 400 IM (5:36.90) and 200 IM (2:31.39). Ethan Thomas had a personal best in his 100 butterfly (1:01.15). Freshman, Katie LaFave, had some good swims at her first-ever laker invitational. She said, “ A fun memory I had at the meet was the Hawaiian theme. I remember that I was already wearing a pink lei but Lilly camp was like Katie put on this purple one too so we can match. Then we took a quick video with our leis on.” For Katie swimming isn’t all about times it’s also about the memories and friendships you make. The swimmers enjoyed themselves and also enjoyed getting to go down the slide at the end of the meet.

JACKSON, MI – The Grand Valley State University Rifle Club recently participated in the 2022 Michigan Rifle & Pistol Association’s Indoor Metric Smallbore State Championship. The match consisted of 60 shots fired in prone, standing, and kneeling positions.
The Lakers totaled two of the 10 entries in the match, which was held at Jackson County Sportsman’s Club. Leading the Lakers was Cassie Coulston-Gerigk (Wayne, Michigan). She finished third overall with a score of 549 (out of 600). She had a score of 192 in prone, 177 in standing, and 180 in kneeling. Alexander Straith (West Bloomfield, Michigan) was close behind in fifth place with a score of 546.

JACKSON, MI – The Grand Valley State University Rifle Club recently participated in the 2022 Michigan Rifle & Pistol Association’s Air Rifle Precision Standing State Championship. The match consisted of 60 shots fired exclusively in the standing position.
The Lakers accounted for two of the 11 entries in the match, which was held at Jackson County Sportsman’s Club. Leading the Lakers was Cassie Coulston-Gerigk (Wayne, Michigan). She finished first overall with a score of 573 (out of 600). She had a high target of 97. The match win earned her the title of State Champion. It was her first career championship. Alexander Straith (West Bloomfield, Michigan) was close behind in fourth place with a score of 562. He also had a high target of 97.

WYOMING, MI – The Grand Valley State University Rifle Club recently participated in the 2022 NRA Precision Air Rifle 3 Position Junior Sectional. The match consisted of 60 shots fired over the course of three positions: prone, standing, and kneeling. Sectional tournaments are registered indoor matches conducted at numerous locations throughout the country. Competitors may select the most convenient location. After firing, scores are sent to NRA where they are nationally ranked, and any national records are recorded. When all tournaments have been fired and entered in the NRA database, a national results bulletin is compiled online, listing every score for that year’s sectional matches (https://competitions.nra.org/results-and-records/national-matches-results/nra-national-indoor-rifle-pistol-championship-results/).
The Lakers totaled two of the eight entries in the local sectional match, which was held at Grand Rapids Rifle and Pistol Club. Leading the Lakers was Kathryn Karas (Carleton, Michigan) who finished in fourth place. She shot a personal best 570 (out of 600). Her strength was the sling positions, posting a 197 (out of 200) in prone and 195 in kneeling. Connor Wardrop (Grand Rapids, Michigan) was seventh with a score of 505. His top target was a 90 in prone.
Karas teamed up with three others to represent Grand Rapids Rifle & Pistol Club. The team posted an aggregate score of 2310 (out of 2400).
The mission of the GVSU Rifle & Pistol Club is to provide all students with the opportunity to participate in shooting sports, with an emphasis in three-position smallbore rifle, international air rifle, and air pistol. Regardless of skill or ability, all members can have a safe and enjoyable time interacting with fellow students and engaging in marksmanship. All equipment is provided, including guns, ammunition, and targets. The club meets Tuesdays from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM and Thursdays 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM during the school year at the Grand Rapids Rifle & Pistol Club (1331 Nagel Ave SW, Wyoming). Practice attendance is not mandatory to be a member of the club; however, regular practice attendance is expected.
