For Faculty

1. Call for Faculty Participants- Academic Success Institute ( attachment)

The successful student success institute for Honors students has led to the creation of a new institute scheduled to begin in August 2012. The Oliver Wilson Freshman Academy students will have an opportunity to participate in the newly developed Academic Success Institute. There is a need for faculty and staff to help support this program. Please review the request and contact Sulari White if you are interested in this professional development and student learning opportunity.

2. Dean's Spring Address

Dean Antczak's Spring Celebration address to the college is posted on the CLAS website:

3. The Fulbright Scholarship

The Fulbright Scholarship is a very prestigious scholarship opportunity for students to pursue research/study and or English Teaching Assistantships in almost 140 countries around the world.  Interested students are strongly encouraged to peruse the U.S. Student Fulbright Scholarship website at to review countries of interest and to determine eligibility.  Applicants must have earned their Bachelor's degree by the start of the Fulbright grant.

GVSU Alumni, Rikki Brown and Sean Duffie are current Fulbright English Teaching Assistants.  Rikki has spent the year in Russia while Sean has spent the year in Spain.  Both had previously studied abroad in the respective country, had an advanced proficiency in the language, and had participated in activities and experiences that well complimented their rationale for pursuing this opportunity.  The Frederik Meijer Office of Fellowships ( provides services to assist applicants with the application process.

Interested and eligible students are encouraged to identify themselves now as they will need to spend the summer preparing their applications.  The campus Fulbright deadline for the AY 13-14 year is set for Friday, September 28, 2012.  Students who plan to apply should contact Amanda Cuevas, Director of the Frederik Meijer Office of Fellowships at, (616) 331-3219, and/or by attending walk-in advising hours from 1-4 p.m. on Thursday in NMH 120.

I would appreciate faculty submitting to me ( or names and e-mail addresses or G#s of students who they think might make excellent candidates for the Fulbright Scholarship.

The campus deadline is Friday, September 28, 2012.

 4. Final Exam Week-message from Mary Schutten

Final Exam Schedule Compliance

As the semester draws to a close I would like to send a reminder about the policy for final exams.  University policy states that all classes must meet for a culminating experience during final exam week, on the appropriate scheduled exam day and time. In the event that the course structure involves a take home final or is an online course, the due date for submission of this exam should be the scheduled exam day and time. Both the Provost and the Dean expect compliance with this policy. There are no exceptions to this university policy.

Confidentiality of Student Work

A reminder to safeguard student work is also appropriate. While it seems efficient to place graded student work in the halls, this practice breaches confidentiality procedures. Please remind colleagues that all student work should be returned in a manner that ensures confidentiality and reduces the likelihood of student theft of the graded work of other students.

5. Keeping an Eye on the Costs for our Students

In his speech last week, Dean Antczak cited the growing amount of debt incurred by many our students.  Faculty may be interested in reviewing our current tuition ( and reading a recent article on the levels of student debt at the state universities in Michigan, including GVSU:

 6. Research Support Request from Calvin College

Provost Davis, Dr. Godwin and Ms. Korzinek (IT) at GVSU have allowed me to make the following request.

If you have been supporting a database specific to your department, I would like to meet with you.  I hope  the outcome will benefit many people.

My research is focused on databases at the departmental level which receive most of their care and feeding by the department.  In my visits to different departments, I noticed certain technical and social patterns surrounding the use of these databases.  I want to confirm if those patterns are common in other places, and if so, I want to develop a framework defining a community of practice that could be adopted by organizations based on lessons learned.

All that is needed is a short interview-- usually  no more than 40 minutes. I would be very thankful for your participation.  Please feel free to email me directly to let me and Sue Korzinek know that you are open to supporting this request.
