1.Strategic Planning

Last week, Dean Drake and Associate Dean Anderson presented a draft of the CLAS Vision and Action Plan to members of the Summer SIG and to unit heads. Over the course of the next several weeks, feedback from those meetings will be incorporated into the draft which will be presented to the College at the Fall Start-Up Meeting on August 26.

2. Intercultural Development Inventory – Administrator Training

There will be an opportunity for faculty and staff to complete a workshop in August to become qualified administrators of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). This qualification would allow people to facilitate the IDI process with faculty, staff, and students and with external groups. If you are interested, please send Donovan ([email protected]) an email by Friday, July 30.

3.  Looking ahead to fall

You can find an up-to-date version of the CLAS Return to the Workplace Plan on the CLAS website {page became out-of-date and was removed].

Right now, masks are required in classrooms/labs/instructional spaces. If that were to change by the fall, faculty will get specific guidance on this point.

Faculty will not be required to teach courses in multiple modalities to accommodate all students. We are, this fall, “back to normal” in terms of our course deliveries being what are published in Banner and our attendance policies. It will be important for faculty to talk with students about attendance policies this fall, encouraging students to limit any days out of class for illness or quarantine.

Faculty will be notified if their students are isolated and quarantined—that is, if the university knows about it. Messaging to students from the university and individual faculty should emphasize that communication to the institution about quarantining will be an important student responsibility so they are accommodated appropriately. Info on how faculty are notified is here:

A student who is quarantined for an extended time or sick may require some accommodations to make up classwork. Typically, faculty are quite good about this, and we’d expect the ways faculty normally accommodate students in such situations—where a medical issue is documented—to apply.

Unit Heads

4. Surge Assistance Request Form

As we approach the start of fall semester, you may notice how the change in PSS support impacts your unit.  If you identify a need for temporary PSS support, please communicate with your pod to determine if there is capacity for assistance.  If there is no capacity and you would like to request Kristin Winfrey’s assistance after August 16, 2021, please complete the Surge Assistance Request Form on the CLAS website.  When submitting requests, please allow 3-5 business days for us to respond with a decision and, if approved, a plan for how the work will be completed.  If the need is urgent, please email Tracy McLenithan at [email protected] and cc Kristin Winfrey at [email protected] with the subject line “URGENT: Surge Position Request” and details, and we will do our best to get back to you within 24 hours.
