Weekly Mailing to TT, AFF, VIS, AP, PSS in CLAS
CLAS WEEKLY MAILING 04-21-21
Thank you for the time you put into visioning conversations this semester. All told, almost 500 faculty and staff from across the College participated in these sessions. The Strategy and Innovation Group (SIG) met three times in February and March to discuss different possibilities for the future of a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at GVSU. That group continues to meet weekly to discuss feedback from the Jamboards that you generated this winter. On May 4, Dean Drake will present initial impressions of the data we collected. In May and June workgroups of faculty and staff from across CLAS will explore ideas and themes that emerged from our winter work in greater depth, and at the CLAS Faculty and Staff Meeting in August, we will present a draft of the College plan. After the university-wide planning process is completed this fall, we will finalize the College plan. The unit-level planning process will take place in Winter 2022.
2. Office Coverage Policy for Spring/Summer Semester (Office Coverage policy during the pandemic)
The CLAS Office Coverage Policy for Spring/Summer Semester is provided above. As the new pod structure begins May 5, we will be discussing ways in which office coverage should be managed.
Each unit head has received a list of currently enrolled students in each major who have yet to register for the 2021/2022 academic year. We are at a significant deficit compared to this time last year in student credits hours and head count. These next few weeks before the end of the semester is a perfect time to reach out to your advisees who have yet to register. If you haven’t received your list of advisees from your unit head, please request that information. Email samples were provided as well, to make this outreach easier. If you need any assistance with this important work, please contact AD Schaner ([email protected]). Thank you for all your help with this.
Final Grades must be posted in Banner BEFORE Noon, Tuesday May 4, 2021.
To all Unit Heads:
Please notify Betty Schaner and Mona Silva of the designees for routing grading emails.
In preparation for grading, please make sure you have accurate contact information for all faculty – tenured, tenure-track, affiliate, visitor and adjunct – in case outreach is needed for missing grades.
The Grading Process
Posting final grades in Blackboard does not complete the process. All grades must be posted in Banner. For instructions, go to Banner Grade Entry Instructions.
The Last Date of Academic Activity (LDAA) must be reported for all students who earn a grade of W, F or NC. For information and instructions, go to Last Date of Academic Activity Process.
Assigning Incomplete Grades - IMPORTANT
A grade of "I" (incomplete) is to be assigned only in truly extenuating circumstances and only if the student has completed most (minimum of 2/3) of the work required for the course.
The CLAS website provides detailed information on the considerations involved in assigning an incomplete grade. Any questions regarding incomplete grades should be directed to AD Schaner.
All faculty are required to submit an online Incomplete Grade form for each incomplete grade assigned.
Please review the university’s Incomplete Grade Policy. Note in particular the timeline for resolving outstanding incomplete grades. The CLAS Dean’s Office will be following this policy as units are contacted at the end of the fall and winter semesters regarding any remaining unresolved incomplete grades.
The faculty driven decision to select a new LMS is underway. As of April 16, only 46 out of 1,643 faculty have voiced an opinion. The deadline for faculty/student participation and input for the LMS review has been extended through May 31 with additional Blackboard Ultra and Canvas live webinar demonstrations scheduled in May.
The selection of the new Blackboard Ultra or Canvas will mean significant changes for you. Based on your feedback, the LMS Task Force will make a recommendation to the Provost and the VP of IT.
Note: Blackboard Ultra is a different version of Blackboard than currently being used at GVSU. Experience Bb Ultra.
Please consider visiting the LMS review website (https://www.gvsu.edu/it/vp/cvr-lms-36.htm) site! You will land on a page where you need to log in. Then on the site, you will find:
the details of the charge
a May schedule for upcoming live demos (via Zoom)
recordings from previously held sessions
a link for requesting sandbox sites
and very importantly, the links to submit your feedback.
There is also a link to a faculty criteria guide that you can use to assist you in your evaluation.
Whether GVSU chooses Blackboard Ultra or Canvas, the changes will be significant. Please ensure your voice is part of this decision.
