2. Advising Tips

Graduation Applications – Winter 2021 and Spring/Summer 2021

Do you have students who are planning on graduating in April or August 2021?  Have they applied to graduate? Students do need to officially apply to graduate – it does not happen automatically.  GVSU accepts graduation applications up through the end of the semester, however it is recommended that students submit their application during the semester prior to the one when requirements will be complete. This allows for timely graduation audits and notifications to be sent in case of any deficiencies. There is no fee for applying to graduate.

Graduation Applications Do Two Things:

  • Initiates an audit to make sure students have completed all of the academic requirements for graduation.
  • Invites students to commencement and includes their names in the program. Filing deadline to have names included in the commencement program is March 26, 2021.

Important Reminder: Students should apply to graduate for the semester in which all requirements are expected to be complete. Spring/Summer (August) graduates are automatically invited to participate in the April commencement ceremony, so there is no need for students to apply early for April graduation just to attend the ceremony (the commencement events are still being determined for Winter 2021).

Approvals of Exceptions for Major and/or Minor Requirements

If you approve a course exception or substitution for a specific student, please send that information to the Records Office at [email protected]. This should be done at the time the approval is given so students and advisors will see an accurate account of completed and remaining courses on myPath.

Just a reminder, myPath is available to you and to students 24/7. There is no need to ask students to apply for graduation to see a copy of the report. If you have any questions about this, please contact AD Betty Schaner at [email protected].

3. Face Mask Policy Reminder

GVSU’s Face-Covering  Policy includes rules for office areas.  It says that face masks are not required when

  • In an enclosed space, when an individual is the sole occupant.

  • In work areas not open to the public where six feet of social distance can be consistently maintained. Within office suites, only reception areas are considered open to the public.

So people working reception areas in offices must be masked, even if clear barriers are in place; staff working elsewhere in offices where they can maintain social distancing do not have to remain masked at all times.

4. AP Award Nominations Open
