1. Strategic Planning Update

Website for CLAS Strategic Planning

Website for University Planning (Reach Higher 2025)

Last week facilitators were trained to conduct the upcoming unit consultations during February and March.  During that training session, the first 19 faculty and staff from 11 different units in CLAS participated in a visioning conversation.  Members of the Strategic Innovation Group (SIG) have received the syllabus of readings and will meet on February 5.  Readings, SIG membership, technical support personnel, and facilitators are on the CLAS Strategic Planning website.

Total CLAS Faculty/Staff who have participated: 19

2. Photo Project on Your Hobbies

Have you seen that the photo team is doing a project on hobbies? We’re photographing people in the GV community who have picked up hobbies (or spent more time on existing hobbies) over the past year during the pandemic. We have a lot of student submissions, and a few alums, but no faculty/staff yet.

Here is the GVNext story that was written about this.

Thank you!!

3. MyBlueLaker Virtual Assistant

GVSU launched the MyBlueLaker Virtual Assistant in 2020. In response to feedback from students, myBlueLaker will soon be connected to Blackboard. Students have asked to be able to use myBlueLaker to look up due dates for assignments and to view their grades. Faculty are encouraged to make their courses "myBlueLaker-friendly". Detailed instruction can be found here. This new connectivity is helpful to students, but also has the potential to save faculty time by reducing the number of deadline- and grade-related questions received.

4. Faculty Advising Tips--Course Drop/Add and Refund Schedule for Winter 2021

Open registration for Winter 2021 ends on Tuesday, January 26 at 5:00 pm. The Registrar’s Office website provides information on the tuition refund schedule for the rest of the semester, as well the steps for students to follow if they want to drop a course. The CLAS Faculty Advising website provides additional information on the steps for students to follow if they want to add a course after the deadline. Students should be made aware that late fees and/or an impact on tuition is likely when courses are added late. Additional questions regarding late registration should be directed to AD Schaner.

5. Tenure Track Governance Elections Announcement

Please note the following important issues regarding our upcoming governance elections:

a) We have made progress with a required technology revision for the CLAS governance election process. The nominations forms, and election ballots, will look new, and operate differently, this year. The new platform is not perfect, but we are confident that we will be able to run effective, accurate elections. The elections subcommittee has worked with Monica Johnstone to make the new platform look as familiar as possible.  I am happy to announce that technological aspects of the elections will be run from the CLAS website. This will increase operational efficiency moving forward, and, reduce the repetitive learning curve for our rotating roster of CLAS Faculty Council members.  Rest assured that your elected Faculty Council will continue to prepare, review, and confirm, all information and ballots. Only the technology platform has changed.

b) There will be two bylaws documents included on the ballot this year.  These are vital to CLAS governance and need your vote.  We on Faculty Council have approved the changes to these documents as your elected representatives; we recommend a positive vote.  The changes to the bylaws are for operational and linguistic clarity. None of the language adjustments change the nature, or spirit, of the original bylaws.  The ballot will link to the revised bylaws. We are not linking to copies of the old bylaws on the ballot as we are not asking for comparative review. This ballot asks for your approval of the bylaws as we present them. Please note that this is Faculty Council doing their work for you to help CLAS Governance operate as efficiently as possible.  The revisions have been a multi-year task of several Faculty Council rosters. There are no committee role changes or assignment revisions involved.

Two Examples of revisions: 1. It has been the longstanding practice of CLAS to refer to the administrative leader of CLAS committees as Chair of the committee.  The original CFC Bylaws refer to the administrative leader as the Secretary. The new bylaws have been updated to reflect the common practice usage of the term Chair.  2. The election dates outlined in the CLAS Governance Bylaws have been revised for improved efficiency.

c) CLAS election dates:

Nominations: Monday, January 25 – Monday, Feb. 8, 2021

Class Election Ballot dates: Monday, February 15 - Monday, February 22.

You may notice that we have not yet adopted the revised timeline outlined in the Governance Bylaws.  We are following the old timeline, with some minor variation because of Covid (late start, etc.). The new timeline outlined in the revised bylaws is slower and better. However, because the new timeline has not been ratified, CFC felt the old timeline was the appropriate choice for Winter 2021 elections.

d) The CLAS CFC Blackboard site has been updated.  TT Elections information will be there as well as on the CLAS website

e) If you have questions, do not hesitate to write to Arthur Campbell at [email protected]
