DESCRIPTION:Most of us think of the Declaration of Independence as something fixed in history\, a document whose importance was obvious the moment it was signed. But in 1776\, nobody knew what would come of it\, or whether the fight for independence would even be won. Join us for a conversation with historian Emily Sneff\, author of the new book When the Declaration of Independence Was News\, published for the 250th anniversary of the United States. Sneff has spent years researching how news of independence actually reached people\, not only through the debates inside the Continental Congress\, but through the work of printers\, post riders\, ship captains\, town leaders\, soldiers\, clerks\, preachers\, diplomats\, and translators who carried the news across the thirteen states and the wider Atlantic world. The program will trace that same journey\, from Philadelphia to cities like New York\, Boston\, and Charleston\, and on to London\, Paris\, and beyond\, showing how people both celebrated and pushed back against the Declaration as it reached them. It's a chance to revisit a familiar piece of American history from a new angle\: as breaking news\, experienced by real people in real time\, before anyone could know how the story would turn out.Register NowProgram Schedule5\:00 p.m. Members Only Reception Begins5\:30 p.m.&nbsp\;Doors Open &amp\; Check-In Available6\:00 p.m.&nbsp\;Program Begins7\:30&nbsp\;p.m.&nbsp\;Program Concludes &amp\; Book Sale\,Signing&nbsp\;&amp\;&nbsp\;Dessert Reception Begins8\:00 p.m.&nbsp\;Book Sale\, Signing&nbsp\;&amp\;&nbsp\;Dessert Reception ConcludesAbout the SpeakerDr. Emily Sneff is an early American historian and leading expert on the Declaration of Independence. DESCRIPTION:Venue Change\: Please note that this event has been relocated to the Richard M. DeVos Center. Each fall\, the Supreme Court opens a new term with cases that will shape the boundaries of law\, government\, and daily life for years to come\, yet most Americans learn about these decisions only after they've already been made. Join us for the fourth annual Eyeing the Bench\, the Hauenstein Center's Supreme Court term preview panel\, featuring veteran journalists who cover the Court for a living. Drawing on their reporting and inside knowledge of how the justices work\, panelists will walk through the term's most significant upcoming cases\, the legal questions at stake\, and what to watch for as arguments unfold in the months ahead. The program will also explore how the press covers an institution that operates largely behind closed doors\, examining the challenges of reporting on the Court's decisions\, deliberations\, and internal dynamics for a public audience. It's a chance to hear directly from the reporters shaping how Americans understand the nation's highest court\, before the term's biggest stories break.Register NowProgram Schedule5\:00 p.m. Members Only Reception Begins5\:30 p.m.&nbsp\;Doors Open &amp\; Check-In Available6\:00 p.m.&nbsp\;Program Begins7\:30&nbsp\;p.m.&nbsp\;Program ConcludesKnow Before You GoAll are welcome! DESCRIPTION:Midterm elections are often treated as a referendum on whoever holds the White House\, but the historical pattern is more complicated\, and more revealing\, than that framing suggests. Join us for Midterms 101\: Historical Patterns and Contemporary Stakes\, a discussion exploring what midterm elections across modern American history can tell us about presidential power\, public opinion\, and the shifting balance of American politics. Panelists will start with the big picture\, walking through the patterns that have emerged across decades of midterm cycles\, before turning to what those patterns suggest about the 2026 midterms specifically.\n\n\n\nThe conversation will also offer an overview of key races to watch this cycle\, along with a discussion of what different outcomes could mean for the current political landscape. DESCRIPTION:For the October 2026 session of Open Minds\, we will be reading and discussing Gender Flashpoints\: The Power of Dialogue by Abigail C. Saguy.\n\n\n\n&quot\;Americans are deeply divided about gender. Like other issues in the US\, debates about gender are extremely polarized and can spark intense anger and conflict. These gender flashpoints include gender identity\, gender and parenting\, gender-neutral restrooms\, the use of identifying pronouns\, and participation in womens sports. Even the term gender itself has become contested. In this divisive social context\, advocates on both sides have reduced complex issues to all-or-nothing propositions. Many people are confused about these topics\, embarrassed about what they do not know\, or afraid that they will be called bigots if they say the wrong thing.&quot\; Gender Flashpoints is a fascinating and comprehensive view of the deeply personal and divisive topic of gender that offers hope for finding common ground and a path forward.&quot\;\n\n\n\nThe discussion for this book will be held on Wednesday\, October 21\,&nbsp\;from 4\:00 to 6\:00 p.m. in the Richard M. DESCRIPTION:The Founders had strong\, and often conflicting\, beliefs about the proper relationship between religion and government\, beliefs that still shape how Americans debate religious liberty today. Our panel will examine what the founders truly believed about religion and government\, how much they actually agreed or disagreed\, and how much weight that historical record should carry in how we interpret church-state separation today.\n\n\n\nThe conversation will also turn to contested church-state disputes in American law and public life\, considering how the principles and virtues drawn from the Founders&#39\; traditions might guide our thinking on them. Trolling. Conspiracies. Social media pile-ons. Campus intolerance. On the surface\, these recent additions to our daily vocabulary appear to have little in common. By explicating the Constitution of Knowledge and probing the war on reality\, Rauch arms defenders of truth with a clearer understanding of what they must protect\, why they must do soand how they can do it.
