This immersive two-day workshop is centered around innovation and action to provide high school students the necessary skill set and tools to develop as innovators and entrepreneurs.  Students will be asked to address and solve some of the pressing challenges that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic.  Students will form teams, create prototypes, and validate your business idea and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs.  The event will end in a big final Pitch with the opportunity to win cash prizes for their innovative ideas.

Program Dates:

High school students will have two opportunities to participate by selecting one of the following innovation challenge weekends.

Friday, January 29 to Saturday, January 30, 2021   (virtual)


Friday, March 19 to Saturday, March 20, 2021  (virtual)


The program will be conducted virtually through Zoom and Bluescape




            4:00 pm – 8:00 pm



            9:00 am – 4:30 pm



            5:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Is there a fee to participate?

There is no fee to participate in this program.  However, students who register and do not show up will be invoiced $75 as a no-show fee.  Students who need to cancel must inform us with no less than 48 hours of the program start date via email cei@gvsu.edu.

How do I apply?

Who can participate?

This program is designed for Michigan high school students entering 9th all the way to 12th grade.

Do I have to have a technical background to participate?

No! Students of all academic and professional backgrounds are welcome!

Can I work on my own?

No!  The idea of this event is to bring students from different backgrounds and skill sets to solve some of the most pressing problems that our society and community is facing.  We need to work together to create great solutions!

How will the teams be formed?

Participants will work together in teams of 3-5 students.  The program instructors and staff will form teams based on interest and experience upon reviewing applications.

Do I need to come with an idea?

No! This program is focused on solving some of the most pressing problems that are resulting from the COVID-19 crisis. Participants are encouraged to come with these problems in mind, but you don’t need to have an answer in hand.

What do the winning teams get?

Teams will have the chance to compete for $5000 in cash prizes for each innovation weekend.  In addition, teams will get access to tools, resources, mentoring, coaching, and access to key partners from the community. 

Mentors and Coaches

We highly value the participation of professionals, entrepreneurs, and innovators as mentors and coaches.  Mentors will work with teams based on their experience and expertise. Mentors do not need to be available for the entire weekend. During the application process, mentors can indicate 2-3 hour shifts that best accommodate their schedule.
