Search Strategies

The same techniques can be used, whether looking for an internship or a job. It’s important to give yourself plenty of time, so start your search early (at least one semester before you want to be hired). While some search techniques are more effective than others, using a combination of the strategies listed below tends to provide the best results.

It’s important to note that, when speaking with potential employers, you want to know the kind of experience you are looking for, the skills you have to be successful, and in the case of an internship, any academic requirements you may have to meet.

  • Career Center Advisors - these folks know the world of work…and a lot of people in it. Each advisor works with specific majors and can provide you with the best advice for entering your field of interest. View the list of faculty and Career Center advisors by academic department.
  • Network, network, network - On average, 75% of internships and jobs are never posted, so identify companies/organizations you are interested in and contact them directly.
  • Connect with Faculty - Your professors are often very connected to the field in which they teach and may have suggestions for you. Some departments also have helpful resources on their website.
  • Attend Events - The Career Center and other departments on campus organize events that bring employers right to campus. These are great opportunities to connect with potential internship sites. View a list of Career Center's Events.

Don’t forget to have your resume updated and ready to go! Many employers will require this when applying for positions.

The Career Center is happy to help with any questions you may have about your resume, cover letter or interview, so don’t be shy - give us a call or stop in!
