Environmental and sustainability studies encompass a broad range of disciplines including physical and life sciences, economic and policy studies to tackle environmental challenges. The field emphasizes a solutions-oriented approach to address issues such as sustainable food systems, energy, water resources, and the general environment. Career options in this field include roles like environmental specialist, technician, science teacher, biologist, chemist, microbiologist, consultant, and engineer.

There are many employment opportunities including careers with the federal government, Department of Agriculture, and agricultural and environmental consulting firms. To enter the field, a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree is typically required. Grand Valley State University offers programs such as a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Sustainability Studies, a minor in the same field, and an undergraduate certificate in Sustainable Food Systems.
