Guidelines for the Provision of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in Public Schools
This guidance document was developed through collaboration with a variety of stakeholders across Michigan, including representatives from education, health, and community organizations. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Michigan Department of Education (MDE) worked with school leaders, mental health providers, and other partners to create it, using Virginia’s Guidelines for the Provision of Behavior Analysis in Public Schools as a model.
The purpose of this document is to provide considerations for districts and private providers in supporting students who may benefit from applied behavior analysis (ABA) interventions during the school day. It explains when and how ABA services might be provided in schools, the roles and responsibilities of behavior analysts, and strategies for effective collaboration. The goal is to encourage clear communication and strong partnerships between school staff, behavior analysts, and families so that students receive the best possible support.
