Grand Valley State University (GVSU) holds the second largest art collection in the state of Michigan. Artwork is thoughtfully incorporated into every university building, creating a virtually borderless museum that spans all of our beautiful campuses. The GVSU Art Museum team empowers our community to engage with visual narratives that align with university values through diverse exhibitions, learning events, resources, and unparalleled access to art.

We believe that visual art-viewing experiences have the power to spark conversations, action, and reflection on core themes of social justice, human rights, and empathy that align with the university's philosophy of liberal education.

Friends of Art Membership

The Grand Valley State University Friends of Art is a group dedicated to supporting the GVSU art collection, art on campus, exhibitions, and events. Membership perks include early RSVP access to exclusive swag, workshops and other events, invitations to member-exclusive events throughout the year, free drinks or discounts at The Borough Coffee Shop, and more!

Every member will receive an exclusive welcome packet featuring artwork from the collection. The first 50 to sign up under the Benefactor level wil receive an original print by Cyril Lixenberg, gifted from the Lixenberg family.

What We Do

The Collection

Search the art collection online, browse artwork by academic topic, or locate artwork by building. Learn how our highly trained staff follow nationally recognized standards for art handling and care.

Art in Public Spaces

The artwork selection process for each space is a collaborative effort between our staff and faculty or department staff, resulting in artwork that enhances and supports learning experiences.

Exhibitions

We curate exhibitions in two traditional galleries and three wall-mounted galleries at our Allendale and Grand Rapids Pew campuses. Each semester we activate these spaces with temporary exhibitions.

Learning

We present events, activities, and resources related to exhibitions and art on campus. We also collaborate with departments and individual faculty to develop additional opportunities.
