The six entries of wearable art were made by
Jewelry/Metalsmithing students at Grand Valley State University. The
work represents diverse approaches to adornment, but all with a
specific intent by the artist be it social, political, humor,
transformation, etc. Each piece is accompanied by a photograph of the
work on the body. The body is the gallery for work of this nature. As
makers, we embrace the opportunity to engage in a public conversation
about contemporary jewelry and its place in society. We hope the work
opens new ways of thinking and unexpected pleasures.
The team of artists represented (Castina Bombardo, Lisa Castro, Tabatha Gulino, Emily Karsten, Anna Petlick, Ellen Stasiak, Jillian Thompson) are current or recent students enrolled in the Jewelry/Metalsmithing program at Grand Valley State University. Each student has been encouraged to express themselves and their perspectives of current culture through the work presented. Each piece is shown in context...how the artist envisions it being worn or utilized....through an accompanying photograph. The reality of jewelry is found through the wearer.
