Description
Kimberly Walker is a 17-year retired, active duty Army Combat Veteran who is now claiming her voice as an artist. Kimberly, a current art student, won ArtPrize's Pitch Night Cincinnati and a $5,000 grant. Walker captured the attention of the event judges, earning the opportunity to realize her vision at Grand Valley State University's (GVSU) L.V. Eberhard Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan during ArtPrize 10 (September 19 - October 7, 2018).
At this event Kimberly will discuss her work, “Locked and Loaded” and her experiences finding a new purpose and career in art.
May 2018 in Cincinnati, a panel of art professionals including Annie Dell'Aria, assistant professor of art history at Miami University selected Walker's work. "One of the reasons why we liked this piece is because it had a really powerful message,” said Dell’Aria, reflecting on the judges’ pick. “It will be a part of other works that are inspired by or completed by veterans, which would be an important thing to enter into that conversation.”
After the presentation by Walker, we'll hear from Tim Marroquin, MA, M.Ed, Director of Veterans Upward Bound and Krystal Diel, MSW, Victim Advocate, Gayle R. Davis Center for Women and Gender Equity. Together, as veterans, current students, victims/survivors of sexual assault, advocate community members, or at some intersection of these and other identities, we'll start an ongoing conversation about available resources and ways to make change in our lives through education and art. Resources and information from related GVSU departments and programs will also be available.
Join us as of 5:30 PM for a reception on the 7th floor of the L.V. Eberhard Center outside the Veterans Upward Bound office. Remarks will start in room 716 of the Eberhard Center at 6:00 PM.
