Description

Join us for a virtual conversation with GVSU Professors Dr. Anna Hammersmith (sociology) and Dr. Gwyn Madden (anthropology) about how the experience of death is defined, honored, and navigated in America and around the world. Through the lens of this conversation we'll look at the artwork in the exhibition Sorrow/Fullness: A Reflection on Mourning by metalsmiths Sue Amendolara, Adrianne Grafton, and Renee Zettle-Sterling.

Professor Hammersmith grew up north of Columbus, Ohio. She attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio where she earned a double major in Sociology/Anthropology and Spanish. In 2018, Professor Hammersmith graduated with a Ph.D. in Sociology and a minor in Quantitative Methods from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. areas of specialization are aging and families, parent’s relationships with their adult children, caregiving, as well as union dissolution and formation in later life.

Professor Madden received her PhD from University of Nevada. She's a bioarchaeologist with specialty in osteology, paleopathology, and mummy research.  Her current research focuses on excavation in Ukraine, analysis of Byzantine period skeletal remains from Jordan, and analysis of three South American mummies housed in Norway. She teaches courses on the connection between culture and the physical body as well as general courses in anthropology, archaeology, and physical anthropology.

RSVP required.
