Description

Join us for a virtual conversation with grief counselor Melissa VanderZyden and death doula Brianna Lynn Hernández Baurichter about how we navigate through experiences of loss and move toward healing. Through the lens of this conversation we'll look at the artwork in the exhibition Sorrow/Fullness: A Reflection on Mourning by metalsmiths Sue Amendolara, Adrianne Grafton, and Renée Zettle-Sterling.

Brianna Lynn Hernández Baurichter is a Chicana artist, curator, educator, and death doula guided by socially-engaged practices. Brianna’s artwork focuses on the experience of providing end-of-life care, grieving processes, and mourning rituals based on her lived experiences, cultural research, and collaborations with others in the field. In addition to formal artworks, her practice offers workshops and takeaway resources for viewers to self-educate through the safety of the creative process. Brianna holds a Master's of Fine Art degree from Kendall College of Art & Design of Ferris State University with a focus in drawing, and she completed a Bachelor's degree in arts management at Columbia College Chicago. Brianna proudly serves as Board Treasurer at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Committee Member for the Gente Chicana/SOYmos Chicanos Arts Fund of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, and as Board Secretary at Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton, New York.

Melissa Vanderzyden is a therapist and former school social worker with over 20 years in public education. Melissa considers it a privilege to journey alongside children and families providing short term interventions and support for individuals experiencing family changes, academic struggles, social learning challenges, as well as grief, loss and trauma.  Melissa works with individuals from childhood through adolescence and adulthood, and offers a compassionate and holistic approach that is client centered, strengths based and solution focused. Melissa holds a Master's in Social Work degree from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor's degree from Hope College with a Social Work major.  In 2005, Melissa experienced the unexpected losses of both an infant son and her husband.  Her experience of living and moving forward with grief guides much of the work that she does with her clients.  She considers it an honor and a privilege to hold space for the deeply personal and sacred expression of grief with those who find themselves navigating their own grief journey.
