Shirley Kleiman, '86

After starting her physical therapy career at Butterworth, Shirley Kleiman, ’86 continues to treat her patients at her own practice, Spine and Sport Biomechanical Rehabilitation Center. Kleiman opened her practice in 1990 after developing her own physical therapy method known as the Biomechanical Correction Technique. With this program, offered exclusively at her practice, patients use biomechanical exercises to treat and resolve skeletal-muscular dysfunctions.

In addition to her B.S. in physical therapy from Grand Valley State University, Kleiman also worked at the university as adjunct faculty in the physical therapy program. She has been certified as and Orthopedic Certified Specialist by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and continues her connection with Grand Valley State University in graduate-level physical therapy clinical research.

Kleiman’s research for the Biomechanical Correction Technique has been presented at the Michigan Physical Therapy Association, the American Back Society, and the National APTA.
She currently lives in Grand Rapids with her husband and four children.
